Historic U.S. Route 66, which is also called the Will Rogers Highway, the Main Street of America or the Mother Road, was one of the original highways within the U.S. Highway System. It originally ran from Chicago, through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, ending in Santa Monica, California, for a total of 2,448 miles.  It was officially removed from the United States Highway System in 1985, and is no longer indicated on current roadmaps. However, much of the route does remain, and with our detailed maps, we will find our way past many landmarks and 1930's and 1940's style eateries and shops along the back roads.

In general, the terrain across Oklahoma is a gradual uphill, while the Texas Panhandle and Great Plains is a flat, wide open expanse of country. Amarillo, Texas is the last large city on the route before you reach the midpoint of Historic Route 66 in Adrian, Texas. In New Mexico, we will follow a pre-1937 alignment of route 66. After a day off in Santa Fe, there is a surprise in store for us as we pedal to Albuquerque, an optional little detour with a huge reward. Not far from Albuquerque, there is a turn to Sandia Crest, the long, high ridge in the Sandia Mountains. If you have the time and plenty of reserves in your leg muscles for this climb, we highly recommend you take this option.
